SuicideGirls Interview with Kate Nash!
By: Garrett Faber
April 30, 2008

Kate Nash is the British starlet that everyone seems to have an opinion about: either they love her or hate her. Briefly speaking with Kate, though, she's so normal it's weird. You'd think that fame and success could easily warp someone, but Kate is such a cool chick that it's almost like she has this whole fame thing in the palm of her hand. Hopefully she won't end up bat-shit crazy like some other pop starlets of late. I doubt it... she's got a good head on her shoulders. SuicideGirls spoke to Kate during a mid-tour shopping escapade, while on the road in support of her current release, Made of Bricks.

Garret Faber: I listened to "Model Behaviour" and it's really punk.

Kate Nash: Oh, did you like it?

GF: I thought it was amazing, it showed some real growth.

KN: I love playing that song; it's about this party I went to which was the worst party ever. I went home and I was just like, "I hate everyone!" The party was really gross, basically about what the song was saying.

GF: You don't have to suck dick to succeed ... Where did that line come from?

KN: Yeah, well [laughs] that was a line to all those models at that party. It was just a bunch of vain people fawning over each other like, "Oh my God, I'm so interesting, who are you? Oh my God." The worst people in the world to meet: random celebrities and hangers on just grabbing all over each other and being gross. I was like, "You don't have to suck dick to succeed. You don't have to be disgusting." I've done my thing and I've won an award. I'm not like them; I'll never be like them. You don't have to sell your soul to society to be happy and do good stuff. That's what the songs about.

GF: That's amazing! A lot of people get big, but then to get bigger they totally sell out. It hurts when good artists go bad. How do you feel about the fame? Do people recognize you on the regular like, "Holy shit! Kate Nash!"

KN: Sometimes, it's weird. On the flight over here a bunch of 12-year-old girls asked me for my autograph and I'm like, "We're on a plane....but okay!"

GF: Have you gotten to meet any of your idols?

KN: Regina Spektor!

GF: Oh my God! Regina? What's she like?

KN: She's so cool, very cool. She reassured me about certain things, it was cool.

GF: What's she like in person? Does she have any weird personality traits?

KN: She's really funny and sweet, and really small, tiny.

GF: What are you doing for your 21st birthday? Remember, you're not supposed to mix liquor and beer.

KN: I do that all the time! I'm okay with it. I can't mix wine with certain things, though. I'll get sick.

GF: What made you decide to cover White Stripes' "Seven Nation Army"?

KN: I love the White Stripes, I had to do a cover for Radio One, so I picked that. I've never met them but I want to record with Jack White. [Laughs]

GF: What’s the most beautiful thing you've seen recently?

KN: Oh my God, literally this morning I saw a beluga whale in real life. At an aquarium, they're so cool. Jellyfish are insanely beautiful. I'm getting a swordfish.

GF: You went to acting school?

KN: I went to college for that for a few years.

GF: Are you going to start acting anytime soon? Can you act?

KN: I want to do short films, I love writing, I've got a fanzine.

GF: What is it?

KN: It's called My Ignorant Youth. I distribute it myself though. I'm at that point in life where most people only want to get fucked up and get laid. I'm really not interested in doing that; I want to change society and I believe in revolution. I feel I should say something, especially to all these young girls who come to my shows. I wanted to make something inspiring with my fanzine and have people just read it.

GF: I'll totally write for your magazine.

KN: You should do it!

GF: Have you heard of the war in Uganda, and the Invisible Children and all that?

KN: Yeah?

GF: I wrote a paper about it, and it hurt to know that like, throughout all this stuff I deal with, children die everyday and it gets mostly ignored over here.

KN: I know, it's sad. You should put that in the fanzine.

GF: Do people really want to read about that?

KN: You have to spread the word.

GF: Let's talk about something not so depressing. On MySpace, do you ever read your fans' bulletins?

KN: Sometimes I do, when I get a chance. I like to see what’s going on with people. I also read all the comments people send to me.

GF: I read that story about how you were about to get signed and you went to the bathroom to call your family and none of them answered their phones.

KN: Yeah! I was crying in the toilet; I couldn't decide what to do. I called my family and none of them answered! I was like, "What if I make the wrong decision?"

GF: How did you decide whether to sign that contract or not?

KN: I called my best friend and she was like, "It's fine. You have a Mom, you're a normal person. Calm down." She was right.

GF: Do you worry about the fame eating you up like Brittney Spears?

KN: I think if that started to happen, my friends would get me. My parents would get me and stop it from happening. I'm a strong person, my album's called Made Of Bricks. You've got to make the right decisions and not screw yourself and not get fucked up. You've got to be honest with yourself about what people expect from you. If you let it all get to you, you'll definitely go insane.

GF: What do you dream about when you go to sleep?

KN: I have the worst nightmares. They're weird. I have really dark nightmares. I had one recently that I was driving this truck around. I go through this shady neighborhood to this dodgy house. I was thinking there were probably drug dealers in this house... it was that kind of house. So, for whatever reason, I'm in this house, but it's fine. I go to the bathroom and there's this dog and the dog's just looking at me. As soon as I come out the toilet, this dog is vicious, it was like biting me and barking at me and I had to run from it and it was chasing me. I knew the dog was going to kill me so I jumped in my truck and drove off. I've had that dream like five times and every time, the dog is nice when I go in, but the dog is killer when I come out of that bathroom!

GF: What does it mean?

KN: I found it significant, like, the time that I arrived things were fine, but the time that I left it wasn't fine. I'm gonna start writing these dreams down, I think.

Kate Nash is finding her own space.
Kate Nash's Web hit made her a star. But can she keep her independence?

The Boston Globe
By Joan Anderman
April 20, 2008

At the tender age of 20, two years out from a job serving fast food and still holed up in her childhood bedroom, Kate Nash is starring in the latest installment of the MySpace overnight-sensation series. Nash's tale, like the others, is a variation on a theme: a young unknown records some songs, posts them on the Web, becomes an Internet darling, scores a major-label record deal, and gets famous real fast - back home in Britain.

As Ron Fair, chairman of Nash's US label, Geffen Records, puts it: "In England what Kate wears and what she says and who she is has kicked in, in a very strong way. Here she's just a girl with a song."

The song is "Foundations," a snappy sketch of a crumbling relationship painted in vivid North London vernacular. It entered the British charts at No. 2 last June, and Nash spent the summer playing to massive festival crowds. "Made of Bricks" - a charming, stylistic sprawl of an album that recklessly runs the gamut between trip-hop and power-pop - followed in August, debuting in the United Kingdom at No. 1.

Fair and company are hoping that the single brings Nash the sort of widespread popularity stateside that has eluded a long line of British pop stars from Lulu to Lily Allen. But strong accents and saucy slang have conspired to keep greater talents from connecting with American listeners. If the cultural divide doesn't bring her down, and with the help of a good editor, Nash could grow into the strong, fresh female voice that's sorely missing from mainstream pop. Not that she cares or will cop to it.

"There are people who's job it is to care about that," says Nash, who plays a sold-out show at the Paradise Rock Club tomorrow. "I'm just hoping I'll have enough pictures to remember what happened."

Nash is as outspoken in conversation as she is in her songs - minus the expletives, which are generally directed at anonymous boyfriends who have done her wrong. Nash evidently made several poor choices before hooking up with her current beau, Cribs guitarist Ryan Jarman. But at least she got some cutting tunes out of it.

"Pumpkin Soup" is a blowsy, horn-and-sample-stoked paean to loveless sex. On "Foundations," over bright piano figures and synthetic beats, Nash slices to the banal core of a disintegrating romance: "I'll use that voice that you find annoying/ And say something like, 'Yeah, intelligent input, darling/ Why don't you have another beer then?" Most of the others have unprintable titles. And Nash has no intention of toning it down for mass consumption.

"There is pressure to do that," she says. "If you're a media darling, conforming makes life easier. But I don't believe in doing that. I don't think I'm particularly mouthy or rude. I'm just speaking my mind. I've got manners, I've got respect for human beings. I've always been opinionated and loud, and I like lots of debate."

Meanwhile, the details of The Kate Nash Story, which may or may not be interesting, and may or may not be accurate, have emerged, sound-bite-ready, to form a portrait of the artist as a hapless phenom. In 2006, the then-aspiring actress was denied admittance to a prestigious acting school. The same day her rejection letter arrived, Nash - who lives in the London suburb of Harrow, which is working-class (according to her press kit) or affluent (if you consult a guidebook) - fell down a flight of stairs and broke her foot. Her parents bought her a guitar to pass the time during her convalescence. She started writing songs. Allen, who like Nash attended London's BRIT School for performing arts (as did Amy Winehouse and newcomer Adele) and whose career was then exploding in England, linked to Nash's tunes on her MySpace page.

The rest is history, brief and embellished, in the current fashion. Without an actual musical resume, today's sudden stars must be equipped with a quirky back story. Nash is having none of it. She may be inexperienced, but she's brave enough to dispute her own mythology, which has been splashed across the pages of reputable US publications since "Made of Bricks" was released stateside in January.

"Sometimes it's written that I didn't know what music was until my accident, or that I didn't play gigs until Lily did what she did," says Nash. "I'm grateful to her, but I don't think she shaped my life. I've studied music since I was 6. My mom's a nurse, my dad works with computers, I have two sisters, two dogs, political opinions, and a life. That's what's shaped the person I am."

In recent months Nash has been popping up on stages around the globe with a new (and some would argue unlikely) collaborator, folk-punk troubadour Billy Bragg, performing a clever medley of her "Foundations" and his "A New England." They plan to record and release a cover of the Shangri-Las' "Give Him a Great Big Kiss."

"He likes her lyrics," says Fair, "the sarcasm and the humor. Her songs deal with everyday stuff in an honest way, so to me it makes a lot of sense. The way Kate speaks to young girls - it's not about being hot."

Nash's alliance with female contemporaries is a big part of both her drive and her appeal. She's neither rail-thin nor fashion-conscious nor most any of the other things that typically secure young performers a place in the pop culture. "This is my face/ Covered in freckles/ With the occasional spot and some veins," she sings to herself in "Mouthwash," consoling at the outset and then ramping up the song into a full-bore power-pop anthem: "And this is my brain/ And even if you try to hold me back/ There's nothing that you can gain."

Nash isn't alone in her effort to buck the status quo. She's often referred to as the next Lily Allen, a similarly forthright, MySpace-anointed iconoclast who defies stereotypes of beauty and behavior.

"I don't want to lose weight and wear designer clothes," she says. "It's not about coming and breaking in America; it's about writing and recording songs."

Only time will tell if the demands of the marketplace will wear down her resolve. Right now Nash is zealous about representing for real girls.

"Going out on stage is the best thing, because they see me and feel better about themselves, and I see them and I feel better about myself," she says. "It's like we save each other in a way."
