KATE NASH & JAMIE OLIVER NOMINATED FOR VOCATIONAL QUALIFICATION AWARD

Kate Nash and Jamie Oliver have been nominated for an award honouring vocational qualifications.

The Foundations singer had criticised academic snobbery while accepting her best female artist award at this year's Brit awards and used her vocational qualification to help her launch her bid for stardom.

And celebrity chef Oliver's vocational qualification was also instrumental in his rise to tackling the health of the nation's school children and helping youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds into the catering industry.

As a result, Nash and Oliver, along with Ann Summers boss Jacqueline Gold and hairdresser Charles Worthington, have been nominated for the first VQ Hero awards, due to be handed out at the Royal Opera House on VQ Day on July 23rd.

Nash graduated from the Brit school in Croydon - which also launched the careers of Amy Winehouse, Adele and the Kooks - and used her Brit awards acceptance speech to stress that university attendance is not the only route to success.

"It's really important to have arts in education because not everybody is academic and not all of us get into university life, but don't worry if you don't," she told the audience at London's Earl's Court in February.

And learning of her nomination today, the Mouthwash singer added: "Not everybody is academic and not all of us want to go to university, therefore it's great that vocational qualifications are now getting the recognition they deserve through VQ Day.

"My vocational qualification was the springboard to my current success and I'm thrilled to be considered for a VQ Hero Award."

Gold, meanwhile, said she was a "walking example of someone who didn't need an academic degree to succeed".

"I can't wait to see everyone else with vocational qualifications receive the recognition I have," she added.

The public can vote for which star they believe deserves the celebrity VQ award at www.vqday.org.

Awards will also be presented to two non-celebrity VQ Heroes, one going to an over-25 and one for a person under 25 who has benefited from a vocational qualification.

Here's a video of the Radio Interview Kate did at Glastonbury with Radio One.

And an exclusive interview with the BBC.

A Walk with Kate

It’s got to be said. Seeing Kate Nash’s eyes light up behind those enormous black lashes and getting a flash of that beautifully imperfect smile on hearing the words “We’re from the Glastonbury Website” is quite a boost for the ego. But watching her entourage step back obediently as she invites us for a stroll and a chat on the way to the next social gathering provides a certain satisfaction that chance meetings with drunken celebrities at the backstage bar cannot hope to compete with.

Still looking flushed and trembling slightly, she pauses to hug her friends and be reassured that it was not just fantastic, but perfect, and it’s no sycophancy either, just genuine heartfelt love. Perhaps whatever spirits were floating on the wind blowing down from the Tor decided to smile on her today, because even the rain has decided to wait until the lady has finished her business.

Glad the weather held out then Kate?
Yeah the weather was really nice, like, it was, like, a really fun performance, I had all my friends with me, the band were amazing, the set looked amazing, and look at my eyes! [bats lashes, while correspondent tries not to swoon]

It was a very angsty performance. It’s amazing how much energy you had this early in the morning!
I know! Well, we got up at 7, but I was really nervous and only got about one hour’s sleep last night, but I’m really glad that it went so well.

So when’s the new album coming out?
I’ve no idea when, but I am recording demos and that, so…er…yeah…yeah…

Can you give us some song titles?
Err, 'Doo Wah Doo', 'Don’t You Want To Share The Guilt?', er, 'Pickpocket' er… 'Seagulls'…

'Don’t You Want To Share The Guilt' was of course aired today, and lyrically an incredibly savage and intense song. Is that song based around mental health issues?
Aaargh! [awkward pause] Oh my God…it was based on…oh I don’t really think I’ve got time to go into that song in depth right now, but I do like your speculation on it though!

KATE NASH IN HOTSTAR!

EDIT If you wish to vote for Kate Nash's debut album 'Made of Bricks' as one of the top 5 Greatest Albums of all time then you can do so by clicking HERE. Thanks to Kirsty for this information.

Sugar and spice and everything nice. That’s what Kate Nash is made of.

Whether singing quirky tunes about a relationship’s cracking “Foundations” or calling a guy out for being a “Dickhead,” the brassy 20-year-old Britpop singer hit the right note with fans when she posted songs to her MySpace page while bedridden with a broken foot.

Her punk-influenced brand of pop led to Nash’s first meeting with ATC Management’s Ollie Slaney, who contacted the singer after hearing her songs online. He went to see her play a gig and was blown away by her performance. “She’s just got that presence that you don’t find every day,” Slaney told Pollstar. “She’s got something really special, and when you see her live, she just captures it.”

That stage presence may have come straight from Nash’s days studying performing arts at London’s BRIT School – the alma mater of fellow British singers Lily Allen and Amy Winehouse – but the comparisons end there. Nash grew up playing the piano, as well as traditional Irish instruments including the tin whistle and bodhran, before picking up the guitar and drums. Her album and live performances have put those skills to the test.

On top of that, Nash’s love for the DIY ethic has played a big part in shaping her career.

“It’s really important to me,” she told Pollstar. “That’s something I try and keep hold of … just know what’s going on all the time. It’s definitely a really important thing I don’t want to let go of.”

Slaney explained that after meeting Nash, he realized just how driven she was. “She did a lot herself,” he said.

“She did her own recordings on her computer with Garage Band … and booked a lot of the early gigs herself. She even sent home demos to [XFM’s] John Kennedy, who played them before I met her.”

With Nash’s momentum in full swing, Slaney said ATC Management hooked her up with producer Paul Epworth (whose credits include Bloc Party and Babyshambles albums) and basically funded Made of Bricks before she ever signed to a label.

“We wanted to make sure that the label knew what kind of an artist Kate was, and Kate knew what sort of an artist she was before we got too many people involved,” Slaney said. “We wanted to have less people as well in the creative process; take the lead with that.”

After Slaney brought in 13 Artists agent Angus Baskerville early on, Nash set off on her first rounds of touring.

“I remember when we first started and my first tour was to like 100-capacity venues,” Nash said. “I was like, ‘Oh God! This is so cool!’”

As she went out on larger tours and adjusted to life on the road, Nash realized how important it was to surround herself with a good team.

“I find it really important to build a community of people that you trust and that you like and you can have a laugh with and also you can have a fight with,” she said. “Because you’re living in confined spaces, it’s kind of dirty and it’s not that comfortable.”

Still, she said she wouldn’t have it any other way, explaining how much she loves touring and playing venues where she can connect with the crowd. “For me there’s nothing like the intimacy,” she said. “I like being able to see my audience. When I perform, I like looking into people’s eyes and acting it out.”

Nash has also taken an especially DIY approach to connecting with her crowds by producing a ’zine entitled My Ignorant Youth that she hands out at shows.

“It’s just no bullshit,” she said. “Like I literally cut stuff out, print it off the computer, stick it in, photocopy it, and give them out for free.”

But her first attempt to pass out the ’zines from the merch table led to mass fan pandemonium.

“It was like panic – the merch desk got broken; it was like in a zombie film when all the arms are coming up,” she said, laughing, explaining that she decided to throw copies out into the crowd after that first incident.

Slaney said it’s always been clear that Nash likes to keep things real and has the final say when it comes down to the direction she takes her music.

“She’s never done any adverts or whatever with her music,” Slaney said. “She made it clear that she didn’t want to be a celebrity and she just wanted to be known as a musician. … We can advise her on what we think’s right, but at the end of the day, all the decisions are made by her.”

Nash agreed.

“I definitely put a lot of truth in my songs,” she said. “If you don’t like my album, we won’t get on … you won’t like me as a person, because it’s who I am.”

After wrapping up a U.S. stint on the NME Awards tour, Nash heads back to the U.K. and Europe for festival season.

Exclusive: KATE NASH REVEALS NEW ALBUM DETAILS

Arriving at yesterday's (May 22) Ivor Novello awards at the Grosvenor House Hotel, Kate Nash revealed that her new album is likely to feature a strong punk influence. Does this mean that hanging around with (her boyfriend Ryan Jarmann's band) The Cribs was rubbing off on her?

"Well, maybe," she replied, "I've always really liked punk music so I think it's something that I always wanted to get more into."

Punk, however, isn't the only influence that'll be palpable on the new album. Nash also told Xfm that producer, musician and one time-Feist, Peaches and James Lidell collaborator Gonzalez was on board.

She added: "I'm also really into stuff like The Supremes and Motown. I just want to get stuck in [to the studio] and see what happens."

Just back from trying to crack the U.S., Nash also spoke enthusiastically of her American sojourn: "American audiences were really supportive...everyone was really welcoming and I really enjoyed the shows. It was along and crazy time and I really enjoyed it."
